Definition:  This component of an aerostat or airship (dirigible) is comprised of a lightweight skin filled with a lifting gas, such as helium. The lifting gas may be in one or more gasbags. The envelope may be non-rigid, semi-rigid, or rigid. The envelope shape may be conventional (ellipsoidal) or hybrid (combining the buoyant lift of lighter-than-air gas with the aerodynamic lift created by the shape of the aircraft as it flies through the air).
