Definition:  A replaceable device designed to remove dust, pollen or other foreign matter from the air passing through it. The removal of particles is accomplished by porous, fibrous or shredded material (metallic or non-metallic) which is loosely woven or matted, the shape of which may be maintained by stiffening or binding material. It is designed to fit into a FILTER ELEMENT, AIR CONDITIONING or for direct application to air conditioners, ventilation systems, hot air furnaces, and electrical and electronic equipment which have retaining devices. Description:  1. A device designed to remove solid particles from fluids ranging in density from heavy liquids to gases. The removal of particles is accomplished by an element constructed so the fluid can flow through it while the solid particles are retained. The degree of removal of particles must be nominally rated at less than 50 microns or absolutely rated at less than 75 microns. See also STRAINER (as modified). 2. A transparent item designed to be used with a light for the sole purpose of altering the color of the light transmitted and/or polarizing the light rays. 3.
