Definition:  Air filtering devices, especially designed to be inserted in the facepiece of the mask. The filters remove from the air passing through them toxic and/or irritating chemical vapors, gases, and particulate contaminants (dusts, fumes, mists, fogs, and smoke), including biological organisms likely to be used in warfare. They may filter industrial dusts, fumes, mists, fogs, and smoke, but are not designed to remove industrial type gases or vapors.

Description:  1. A device designed to remove solid particles from fluids ranging in density from heavy liquids to gases. The removal of particles is accomplished by an element constructed so the fluid can flow through it while the solid particles are retained. The degree of removal of particles must be nominally rated at less than 50 microns or absolutely rated at less than 75 microns. See also STRAINER (as modified). 2.
